Inexpensive DVRs for cars are the most extensive category of components, the demand for which is steadily growing. If 5-7 years ago such models strictly limited the quality of shooting, capture angle and resolution, today the boundaries between a budget and premium device in the parameters of operation are almost invisible.
Due to the high popularity of cars and the increasing number of road accidents, car owners have an urgent need to equip their vehicles with surveillance cameras that can track and capture the situation on the roads in real time. In turn, this pushed the market to form new manufacturing companies, and, subsequently, fill it with new models of devices. Due to the tough competitive environment, the consumer faces a big problem of choice, which can only be solved by studying the segment of interest. Or trust the opinion of experts and get acquainted with a selection of the best DVRs worth up to 5000 rubles from an online magazine. During the careful selection of nominees, the opinion of the expert Commission was taken into account, as well as reliable consumer reviews left as they used a particular DVR.

Dunobil Chrom Duo
The leading line of the rating goes to the excellent in all respects chrom Duo DVR from the German company Dunobil. Made in an elegant case, this device includes two cameras at once, which is why it can also be used for Parking needs: the advantage is that the device’s processor has a built-in function for projecting Parking markers.
If we talk about the quality of shooting, then the main Chrom Duo unit provides recording in 1920 x 1080 resolution with a frequency of 30 frames per second. At the same time, visibility reaches 170 degrees – an almost unfolded angle, which often saves drivers in controversial situations in an accident. The auxiliary camera, in turn, shoots at the same 30 frames per second, only in a resolution of 640×480 pixels – not enough, but it is quite enough for Parking a car. The advantage of the Assembly is that it can work at temperatures up to -30 degrees Celsius, making it possible to use it in the regions of Siberia. In the end, the Dunobil Chrom Duo is a great device, the external design and technical characteristics of which more than beat off the price tag.
- ability to connect an additional camera;
- the main stream recording resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels;
- projection of Parking markers when using a complete auxiliary camera;
- operating temperature up to -30 degrees Celsius;
- excellent quality.

Artway AV-390 Super Night Vision
The Artway AV-390 DVR, which, in our opinion, is the best in terms of night shooting quality among all devices that cost up to 5,000 rubles, stopped a step away from the leader of the rating. Manufacturers allowed themselves to experiment with the CMOS matrix and the camera as a whole, playing on a significant improvement in video capture parameters in the dark…and, as it turned out, they did not lose out. The hybrid system of a 3-megapixel sensor and built-in LED backlight gave a stunning result in terms of video quality, complementing the already “powerful” FullHD shooting at 30 frames per second. At the same time, a new lens with a viewing angle of 170 degrees was integrated into the AV-390. In fact, the video showed a full sweep of the situation on the road-more than the driver sees when driving a vehicle.
Despite the fact that everything looks great (even the system received (in addition to motion and impact sensors) an additional set of functions – SOS and WDR), Artway made one small miscalculation, which is the parameter of a narrow operating temperature range. The threshold of -10 degrees is overcome in almost all regions of Russia, and therefore the use of AV-390 receives a strict restriction.
- excellent shooting quality in the dark;
- 3-megapixel CMOS sensor with reduced tendency to generate noise in the image;
- 170 degree viewing angle;
- availability of additional system functions (SOS and WDR).
- small operating temperature range (-10 to +50 degrees Celsius).
Xiaomi YI Smart Dash Camera
Another representative of Xiaomi, who gives out amazing results in terms of shooting even despite the very low price. Xiaomi YI Smart Dash Camera is the flagship model of the budget segment, capable of writing video in SuperHD quality (2304×1296 pixels), while producing a stable 30 frames per second. However, to increase the result by frames, it is enough to reduce the resolution to 1080p, and enjoy an ultra-clear image with a smooth level of 60 frames.
In addition to a sharp increase in quality relative to the lower models, YI Smart Dash Camera boasts a viewing angle of 165 degrees, inaccessible even to some premium models. In the case of this DVR, the effect of a “beautiful thing” with a well-thought-out design of the box and lens, as well as perforations to ensure running ventilation (from the top and bottom of the case, diagonally), is also important. And finally, we should say a few words about the possibilities of connecting the camera via Wi-Fi. If Xiaomi MiJia had problems with localization, then YI was initially focused on the Russian market, and therefore the Chinese worked out the issue of translating the interface and control program. The end result exceeded all expectations, and the DVR became a valuable asset of Xiaomi (along with smartphones).
- the ability to shoot at a resolution of 2304×1296 with 30 fps, or in 1920×1080 with 60 fps;
- the camera’s viewing angle is 165 degrees;
- well-thought-out ventilation system (flow-through, with perforation of the case at the top and bottom);
- complete localization of the menu and control program for your smartphone.
- not detected.
Quite an original video recorder, which received high marks from consumers for its stylish appearance and “hypertrophied” operating parameters. Unlike all the nominees listed below, Playme MIDI supports video recording in SuperHD resolution-2304×1296 pixels. This somewhat non-standard selection is due to the fact that manufacturers wanted to distinguish the device from the crowd of their own kind. The viewing angle was 150 degrees, and the frame rate was kept at 30 per second.
Along with the beauty of the Playme MIDI case, the “built-in” driver care function is also surprising. It is expressed in the presence of LDWS-alerts about safe driving, however, after a while it begins to bother and even annoy. The database also contains a G-sensor and a motion sensor-standard things even by the standards of budget DVRs. One of the main advantages of the model is the ability to expand memory up to 128 GB: this possibility is not represented by those who are lower in the hierarchy, or those who are in the top three. A unique video recorder, the purchase of which should definitely be considered.
- shooting in 1296p (Super HD quality);
- the ability to expand the memory by setting up a Micro SD of 128 GB;
- nice design, very compact camera;
- the simplicity and reliability of use;
- it can withstand temperatures up to -30 degrees Celsius.
- it is not revealed.
The camera, which has received wide publicity due to advertising from many well-known auto-bloggers, takes the fifth place in our rating. CARCAM T3 is a device focused on ease of use and reliability, including a large number of special sensors and easy navigation through the menu. Due to the rejection of push-button control, manufacturers were able to increase the display by equipping it with a sensor with fairly large control units (the screen diagonal is 3.5 inches). The video is recorded in Full HD format at 30 frames per minute and with a viewing angle of 140 degrees.
Like all models of the mid-budget level, the CARCAM T3 DVR has the capabilities of cyclic and continuous shooting, and in the first case, the user is not given any choice – the video sequence is clearly divided into minute segments. To make sure that everything gets into the frame, manufacturers have integrated impact sensors (G-sensor) and motion sensors into the design, which bring the camera into operation when large objects get into the viewing area or a sharp impact (acceleration). The final touch in the characteristics of the model can be called the ability to expand memory up to 32 GB, which, as in the case of the Artway AV-520, is an average result.
- rejection of push-button control in the direction of the sensor;
- the viewing angle is 140 degrees, and the video is written in a resolution of 1920×1080;
- ability to connect an additional camera;
- motion and acceleration (impact) sensors are integrated into the camera.
- shooting in the dark.
A video recorder with good recommendations from users, which was included in the rating due to a very successful configuration and set of features. The whole point of the Artway AV-520’s superiority over previous nominees lies in the availability of an additional camera and the asking price: after paying 3,000 rubles, the consumer gets a device that can provide a view in several spatial positions at once, whether it is a side plane, a car interior or a rear area. The main camera of the model is shot in a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels with a frequency of 25 frames per second – the minimum required for a comfortable image perception. The viewing angle at the same time is 120 degrees, which, even if a little, but again, fits into the standards.
In General, the Artway AV-520 seems to be such an average version of the DVR, in which literally everything is verified within the standards. It supports MicroSD cards up to 32 GB, loop recording (1, 2 and 5 minutes each) and night shooting (thanks to the IR illumination). As a result: the device came out quite good, but unfortunately it is not able to surprise with anything other than the second camera in the kit.
- two cameras included;
- low price;
- ability to record videos in Full HD format;
- the presence of infrared illumination and photo mode.
- a rather “boring” model with averaged characteristics.
Xiaomi MiJia Car Driving Recorder Camera
Quite an interesting DVR from a well-known Chinese manufacturer of mobile equipment, the cost of which is very close to the “ceiling” of our rating. And, however, it pays off very well, both in terms of functionality and appearance criteria.
Providing a viewing angle of an impressive 160 degrees, Xiaomi MiJia allows you to record video in a resolution of 1920×1080 and 1280×720 pixels, while supporting capture up to 30 and 60 frames per second, respectively. For remote control of the shooting process and the ability to view video, the device provides a Wi-Fi connection, but full access can only be obtained by installing official software on your smartphone (or tablet). The camera has a built-in backlight system that allows you to get a high-quality image even at dusk and in the dark. Perhaps the only truly serious drawback of Xiaomi MiJia can be considered the lack of official localization. Of course, the situation is corrected by installing the Russian language package from narodnye umeltsev, but this looks extremely raw and somewhat spoils the overall impression of using the DVR.
- nice design;
- ability to record video in resolution up to 1920 x 1080 pixels;
- high-quality shooting at night;
- camera control function when installing official SOFTWARE on your smartphone.
- lack of Russian localization.
Closes the top eight action camera LEXAND LR40, successfully converted for use as a video recorder in vehicles. Its versatility is due to two factors: first, the quality of the resulting video and a set of functions are excellent for capturing the traffic situation, and secondly, the convenient mounting system and dimensions do not take up much space and do not interfere with the view.
The entire LR40 optical system is based on the use of a 1-megapixel CMOS sensor, which allows you to shoot Full HD video at standard 30 frames per second. In the photo mode, the same camera provides the ability to get a high-definition image, in 4K resolution. There is a built-in G-sensor that allows you to activate recording on impact, as well as a cyclic recording function with automatic “unloading” of media memory (up to 32 GB). Also worth mentioning is the night shooting mode, which activates the backlight to get a fairly detailed image – without it, the matrix would not be able to cope even with shooting at dusk, since the resolution imposes a certain number of rather strict restrictions.
